Understanding the complexity of a child requires the mindfulness and presence of a more mature individual who is conscious of the consequences of both good and bad behavior, the influence of pain - expressed and unexpressed, personal and interpersonal - and the influence it has on perceiving reality. The power of projection and emotional clarity, as a by-product of experiences, has the power to determine the extent to which a child's emotions are determined, evaluated and understood by an emotionally mature individual, such as a parent, and the potential measures used to process, regulate and assist with the healthy futuristic expression of emotions.

Parents often times feel incapable of assisting a child/ children with processing and regulating emotions. I believe that this stems from feelings of fear and a weak bond between parent and child. This has a detrimental affect on the way emotions are expressed, and understood by the parent.

Therefore, parents should aim to:

  1. establish a bond of trust with the child/ children

  2. refrain from exploiting this relationship

  3. allocate time to exploring the personality and characteristics of the child, and search for common grounds of interests that can be used to strengthen the bond between the child and parent

  4. listen attentively and speak to lovingly

  5. do not patronize the child, model effective ways to deal with negative behavior other than reprimanding the display thereof.

Kids are entitled to their feelings too, often times they feel at a higher intensity than more mature individuals. Their feelings are worth regarding especially as they learn to understand and establish their position on the world.
